Since its beginning in 2008, it has grown to be, in essence, an “open-door collective” of professional theatre makers that is made up of a flexible number of clowns/directors/ designers/physical performers/writers nationwide. Permanent members are the co-artistic directors, Rob Murray, and Liezl de Kock.

A Conspiracy of Clowns is geared towards strongly promoting a collaborative approach to creating high concept, high production value, original theatre work with a particular focus on alternative approaches to making theatre in the field of clowning, visual theatre, image theatre, puppetry, and contemporary devised performance.

Works to date include the multiple award-winning PICTURES OF YOU (2008-present day), the cabaret clown noir piece KARDIāVALE that premiered on the 2011 National Arts Festival Arena Programme, the Handspring Puppet award-winning BENCHMARKS that premiered on the 2011 National Arts Main Festival, and its new work, the Standard Bank Ovation Award-winning CRAZY IN LOVE (2013).

At various times, the Conspiracy has worked with Jayne Batzofin, Dorian Burstein, Sean Acker, Natalie Mason, James Webb, Brydon Bolton, Janni Young, Cristina Salvoldi, Craig Leo, Daniel Robinson, Thumeka Mzayiya, Tanya Heywood, Tom Schwarer, FTH:K, Galina Juritz, and Gustavo Fasani.
