Rob Murray (co-Artistic Director)
Rob Murray, AKA “Ugli Bob”, has worked with award-winning companies such as from the hip: khulumakahle (FTH: K), Ubom! Eastern Cape Theatre Company. He has racked up a number of original, innovative, physical and visual creations such as the smash hit Pictures of You (the top-selling theatre production on the Fringe 2009, winner of 2 Fleur du Cap 2009 Theatre Awards, and winner of a 2010 Standard Bank Ovation Award), Benchmarks (on the 2011 National Arts Festival Main programme and 2011 Handspring Puppet Award Winner), Womb Tide (nominated for a slew of Fleur du Cap and Naledi Awards) and QUACK! (nominated for 2010 Handspring Best Visual Theatre Production). He has also performed in a number of shows, the foremost being as the overbearing innkeeper in FTH: K’s award winning GUMBO, and as the sinister Oskar in Conspiracy of Clowns Kardiavale.
In 2010, Rob was nominated as one of 25 theatre makers internationally for the prestigious Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts initiative to work with theatre director mentor, Peter Sellars.
Rob is currently a replacement lecturer at Rhodes University Drama all the while starting the long trek towards a PhD. Recent work includes dramaturgy for Rhodes University’s Reza de Wet tribute, Drifting, and directing the devised creation of Ubom!’s Hoss.
